Polymer Clay Rings

(Click on picture for larger view.)

This is my most recent fun thing to do with polymer clay -rings!
I've wanted to make inexpensive rings for the last 20 years and now am able to do so, after discovering this aluminum armature wire at an art store. (Aluminum wire is 1/16" -no gauge was listed.)
Use with any pc design of your choice. The beading edge on B. & C. is pull chain. It is held with Mod Podge on a back layer that has a 1/8" ledge to hold the bead chain, and is done prior to baking. (Bead chain can be found in the lamp accessories area of any home improvement store and comes in a variety of colors.)
The tool was in my tool box, and I have no idea of its intended use. The important thing is the graduated handle that is perfect for wrapping the wire. After preliminary wrapping I take off the wire and try it on. It can be easily resized smaller by moving toward the tool end and pulling on the end wires, or larger by forcing further back on the handle. Any similar-handled tool would also work for you.
  • I wrap the wire around to make 2 complete loops.
  • Next, coil the ends of the wire as shown with a needle-nose jewelry pliers. You may need to flatten the coil with the pliers.
    A. shows some polymer clay on the back on top of the wire, so the ring coils had to be larger to accommodate the pc. This makes a strong ring.
    B. shows a tiny dab of pc on the coils only.
    C. shows the coils offset to the sides to add a design effect that you can see from the front.
    D. & E. show the coils being used for support on the back only.
  • With the pc design added, liberal Mod Podge was painted over the support coils on the back, and then baked at 275 degrees for 30 minutes.
  • After baking, I applied Delta Ceramcoat Gloss Varnish (any water-based varnish coat would work). I applied extra to the coils to make a secure bond that will withstand putting on and taking off the ring.
I now can have rings matching any outfits I want. They are great for gifts too. Have fun - - - I sure am!
